Why do some Christmas movies portray Santa as kind of grumpy or stern rather than cheerful?

He’s kind of grumpy in the 1964 Rudolf, and to a lesser extent, Elf. In The Polar Express, he’s not at all jolly, but stern and imposing.

Is it because we’re seeing him when he’s not in his sleigh? Perhaps the stress of his job is supposed to be getting to him more.

I really hate to break it to you.... But Santa is not real........ (How old are you?) Nobody can get around the world in seconds. Even with magic.
