A person "at rock bottom" shouldn't arrive in Los Angeles thinking there's anything here for them. If you can't even afford a short term rental you'll end up homeless, and homeless here actually means being exposed to a litany of potentially fatal diseases.

Burbank and near downtown Los Angeles. Stick close to Staples and don't go too far south. Most other places are too expensive. Anywhere else you may need to think about finding a roommate. Outside of Compton, Watts, South Central, Long Beach, etc.

LA isn't the place for Rock bottom.

Why do you pick one of the most expensive places to do this?

Then you have inadequate mass transit, enormously large square mile of "city", a middle class that is sick & tired of the homeless....

Here's a list of the best cities to be young and broke...

go try one of them.... none of them are in California.

That depends on what your rock bottom is and what your skills are.
