The World Meteorolgical Organization compiles a list of hurricane, typhoon and tropical cyclone names for a given basin. The lists are unique to each basin (Atlantic, eastern Pacific, western Pacific, southern Pacific and Indian) and rotate every six years, with names only changing to replace retirees. They are in alphabetical order, alternating between masculine and feminine, omitting the letter Q and stopping at the letter W. If named storms develop after W has been used, they are named for letters in the Greek alphabet. The only year storms have been given Greek alphabet names in the Atlantic basin so far has been 2005.

  • As Stan pointed out, the World Meteorological Organization has a list of names. What he didn't tell you is that sometimes names are retired because of the severe effects of the storm. Most recently Michael was retired in 2018, and a new "M" name will be used in 2024 for Atlantic storms. You can look at Wikipedia for retired storm names and a list of names for the year.

The World Meteorological Organization assigns names to all tropical storm. They maintain a list of 21 names for each year that will repeat after six years ( total of 121 names). That is, you'll see another tropical storm Barry in 2025. If a tropical storm. The only time they remove names from the list is if a storm is particularly devastating, the name will be removed from the list and a new name will be added.

The list of names they're going to use in a given year is written up in advance. And you can ignore the Weather Channel's names for things that aren't hurricanes, they're unofficial.

A computer program does that so the names are all different. Plus any name given to a hurricane that killed anyone can never be used again.
