Why has the vast development of electric cars taken so long?

Feel like the development has been long over due, especially considering they've been around for almost as long as regular cars. So surely they could've added more and more development into the electric cars through the past century.

Two main reason. They have lots and lots of gasoline to sell.

Battery development. Lead acid works but it's bulky heavy and dangerous. You need lots of juice for automotive to work and it takes lots of batteries.

Get in an accident with ten or twenty lead acid in your truck and you can get seriously burned blinded and otherwise damaged from the acids ALONG with everything else that could hurt.

    Just too dangerous.

Electric cars are not the answer. How much pollution do you think is created just by making the batteries? ;-(

Electric cars aren't the answer because communists have grabbed the industry no other reason.

They're too expensive compared to other cars the same size

They have a limited range, and replacing the drive battery costs thousands

There are too many obstacles to that industry in America. Look to Europe and Japan to tackle this issue.....

Lead batteries are heavy and don't hold much charge compared to lithium batteries. To a middle aged guy like me, lithium batteries are a relatively new invention.

Because fossil fuel cars have been cheaper, better, and more effective for a long time. Today there is massive infrastructure to support fossil fuels, not so for electric. Since electric has been around since the late 1800's it has been a long time.
