You have to drive defensively, meaning that you don't know who the other drivers are, so you have to watch out for any mistakes they might make, and don't assume they are perfect drivers who won't make sudden stops or turns. For example, tailgating too closely behind someone means you're assuming that person will keep a constant speed and not have to slow down suddenly for a pedestrian or animal in the road.

Go with the flow of traffic. Be especially careful in parking lots, which is where most fender benders happen. Even though it's okay to go 30 mph on side streets in some places, I wouldn't do that. The big thing is to avoid pedestrians. The order of who owns the road goes something like...

    - pedestrians

    - non motorized vehicles

    - emergency vehicles

    - public transportation

    - vehicles that cannot stop quickly, like trains

    - heavy vehicles for same reason

    - then lastly cars

Ok, Ok, an airplane isn't a car. But it is a vehicle and Dead is Dead. More die in their own beds than on roads.
