20GB fat models - both PS1 and PS2 digital and physical compatible with this model.
40GB fat models - PS1 physical and digital compatible. PS2 digital compatible ONLY. The physical copies of PS2 games WILL NOT WORK on this model.
60GB fat models - same as the 20GB.
80GB fat original model - same as 20/60GB if I’m remembering it correctly.
80GB slim models and onwards - same as the 40GB model.

The original launch ps3 (20, 60 gb) can play ps2 games. They used hardware emulation so they can play pretty much all ps2 games.
Sony then introduced the 80 gb which uses software emulation so it plays most ps2 games. Don’t confuse this 80 gb with the upgraded 40 gb (which cannot play ps2 games). Sony introduces a 40 gb version which cannot play ps2 games because people were complaining that the 60 gb ps3 was too expensive ($600 at launch). This was a value system for those that didn’t want to pay 600 for a console. Sony then upgraded the hard drive to 80 gb.
The easiest way to tell is to look at the front. If there’s 4 USB ports, it can play ps2 games. 2 USB ports, it can’t play ps2 games.
All ps3 can play ps1 games.

I believe that would be the 40/60 GB model, the old fat PS3’s.

That would be the fat model with the expansion slot for sd cards etc. Also they wont overheat if you delid them and put good quality paste and you resemble it back tightly and keep it well ventilated
Just a pre caution. Deliding them requires someone with experience. If you do it you will probably damage it.

The only PS3 consoles that can play PS2 games from disc are the oldest models, which are also the ones most likely to overheat and have other problems. Those consoles are 12+ years old at this point so it's hardly surprising.

There are no PS3 models that can play PS2 games that won't overheat eventually.
All PS3 models can play PS1 games.

1st gen ps3s were fully backwards compatable, but theyre getting harder and harder to find. You'd have to get a jailbroken ps3 that has specialist software downloaded to allow you to install and run ps2 games. A properly operating ps3 shouldnt overheat
