Do you mean its *fractional* scale?

If we assume that each kilometer in real life is equal to 1 cm on the map, then the fractional scale would be:

    1 cm : 1 km

But we need the same units to make this work, so convert km to cm:

    1 km x 1000 m/km x 100 cm/m

    = 100,000 cm

    The ratio is:

    1 cm : 100,000 cm

But now you can drop the units which are the same.

    Answer:

    1 : 100,000
