Why do boxers wear boots?

Hate to sound dumb but they look heavy. Is there a reason they don't wear something as light as running shoes? (Again, sorry if this is a dumb question.)

While practicing all the boxers wear running shoes. Which provides them better grip while releasing a punch.

Given the amount and range of movement a boxer goes through, it would help support the ankle/foot ligaments etc.

They are not boots. They are a type of athletic shoe.

Boots keep your ankles stay stable yes they're harder to move around in but if you get hit they help you to stay on your feet and not go down

Probably part tradition and part keeping their ankles supported.

Mike Tyson wore lower style boots and no socks. He would also pay a fine to wear black trunks.

That's from the days of black and white T.V. so viewers could tell which boxer was which.

The boots are custom made and are very light, comparatively.
