The region that will be affected the most is in a seismic line between San Francisco and the area where the gulf meets up with the land at Baja California. This area is constantly in motion, and is the line where the quakes strike most. With a combined 6 and 7 in the same area, it is likely there will be another somewhere along that line. Only people living within 100 miles of the center will be affected, so the number of deaths will be limited. People talk about California falling into the ocean, that line would be the area that would split if it happened, and most likely it would only result in a deepening of the gulf, not anything falling off.

You forgot that Cascadia begins where the San Andreas ends.

The deadliest and most powerful earthquakes are megathrust quakes. They can kill hundreds of thousands of people, not just with the shaking, but mostly with the ensuing tsunami. So when the "Big One" strikes California, it will do so in the north. And a large number of people living along the coast will be crushed or drowned. The tsunami will claim lives all the way along the western coast of North America.

Yes, at some time your brother is going to die. We're all going to die.
