If every driver in the US switched to electric cars, would it reverse Global Warming or slow it down significantly?

It would slow it down. Many of the power sources that produce electricity used for charging those cars generate by burning fossil fuels. Usually natural gas but there are still some that burn coal. However, electric cars are more energy efficient then burning gasoline so it's still a good thing.

Shut down the grid, thats for sure. Along with giving government a LOT more control over transportation. "You can go where Uncle Sam lets u go". Also throwing a huge monkee wrench into the economy.

  • I doubt it, because 75% of power comes from coal burning powerplants.

It would help, but there is still the rest of the world to consider. Also, don't forget about all the other machines that use fossil fuels.

It depends on how the electricity is produced. If your electricity comes from coal, electric cars would do little good. If your electricity comes from nuclear or hydroelectric power, the electricity will be emission free. If your electricity comes from solar power; actually, the electricity won't come from solar power unless you work night shifts and plug your car in during the day. If you plug your car in at night, your "solar" electricity will actually come from natural gas, using generators which are much less efficient than combined cycle systems or ultra-supercritical boilers. If you like wind or solar power and don't like nuclear power, get a hydrogen powered car. Hydrogen can be produced when the wind is blowing and the Sun is shining by electrolysis and stored until you need it.

You keep yammering about nuclear. More evidence that mom is pumping too much CO2 into her basement.

It would make no difference because the methods used to generate electricity are no better than gasoline.

Meanwhile, Eastern Europe and China continue to pump smoke and exhaust into the air to such an extent that there are days when they can't see across the street. America isn't the biggest polluter, and the nations that top the list couldn't care less how many rainbow and sunshine special tree hugging parades you hold.

Have you ever watched the news? They have shown the poor air quality in China. At mid day it looks like dusk, they can't see the end of the street, people wear masks even inside their homes. That garbage island everyone blathers about? The majority of what they have found is Chinese.

IF, and ONLY IF, they were charged with non-fossil-fuel produced electricity (solar, nuclear, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal) they would slow global warming to some extent.

No effect if we go back to coal for electricity.

We won't reverse global warming unless we start actively pulling carbon out of the air.

I'd rather have global warming then mutagenic global radioactivity from nuclear power plant accidents like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima

"Electric cars are 4-times more efficient than gas-powered vehicles. That means that if everyone in the U.S. made the switch, the country’s CO2 emissions would immediately drop by 8.4%."

Where does all that increased electricity come from? And what happens when those Americans decide to take a trip?
