They did so on a very limited knowledge of geography, and knew nothing of continental or tectonic plates.
Asia and Europe share the same continental plate, nor are they separated by sea. From a geological perspective, they are one continent.
To further complicate matters, there is no authority on the definition of a continent, so you are no more or less of an authority on defining continents that I or anyone else is. It’s simply a matter of general acceptance based on what Ancient Greece decided based on whatever qualifying factors they used to define them.
You can decide whether Russia is part of Europe or Asia and there is no one who can officially tell you that you’re wrong.
Once you figure that out, you should figure out if Pluto is actually a planet or not.
