How real is the theme in movies of scientific experiments in an old warehouse or garage with freight elevator?
Is this simply an artifact from 1960s counterculture? Why it is not a barn? Why it isn't in rural areas? Why it is not in a basement?
Usually the time portal or the computer center or the hideout will be in this industrial part of town.
Only the movie primer didn't use this typical them and instead used a more realistic self storage.
There was even a time in the late 80s when forgotten subways linked to sewers were the hideouts!

Probably very real in places like Michigan where industry has stalled and there are many empty buildings. There always are places like that cause when a mine runs dry or a mill shuts down, it kills aces so lots of big empty buildings is the eventual result.
