What would America be like if after the Civil War all blacks were either settled in their own nation carved out of the Confederacy?

or shipped back to Africa en masse

While many blacks had considered returning to Africa, for the majority it was never an option as they were 'Americanized'. Imagine being sent to a continent where you had descended from a variety of tribes, many of whom had been in conflict with each other for hundreds of years, and were asked to just sort of integrate. To add to that, for educated blacks, Africa seemed all the less appealing.

So let's say that America basically set aside a state, and said it was the state of free black persons. Well the immediate problem there is that America often reneged on their promises to natives, so what would bind them to honor what they'd given to blacks? Eventually, whites would find something of value and want whatever territory blacks were given, and blacks would need to defend themselves. At that point, the entire military might of the US would come in and slaughter black people en mass. That may sound prejudice against whites, but that's just sort of how things worked back then.

So finally we have the option of the blacks being relocated to an island... let's say they were just given the Dominican Republic (for example). The immediate question would arise of America's responsibility over these newly freed people. Would the US need to protect them, should they be considered citizens of America, or should America be un-involved?

As people considered these options more and more, most blacks found that (despite how awful the US was to them) they'd rather just stay put.

It probably would have been Florida. And it would be like the Caribbean Islands. Within 50 years after the civil war, the invention of the internal combustion engine would have ended slavery and the modern machine age would have started.

Abraham Lincoln actually suggested shipping the slaves to Africa and the Carribean but Frederick Douglass was opposed to it because he felt that it was morally wrong to do so.

The United States wouldn't be the cultureless shithole it is now. It would be almost like paradise.

Southern States elected a large number of black representatives after the Civil War, that's why the Clan was started which started murdering them all, as well as any black person that tried to vote. They they started Jim Crow and the US had to send down the federal army AGAIN to enforce equal rights on the south AGAIN at gunpoint.
