Do camcorders still exist or were they a thing of the past?

They were popular in the ‘80s and the ‘90s for as all as I know.

Depends what you mean by a camcorder. But note any large news gathering as seen on TV - you will, see lots of camerapeople using lots of "camcorders"!

Yes, probably, but they have become outdated technology. I have a CRT television with a DVD player. The picture The TV no linger works, but the DVD player might work

You obviously don't get out much, and you haven't been paying attention.

    Camcorders are current technology.

The newer ones use memory cards instead of tapes or discs,

but otherwise they are pretty much the same as the old ones.

Yes, definitely, they just use newer storage rather than tapes.

You can't get VHS tapes for them anymore so they're a thing of the past.

The recording medium (such as VHS tape) they use is not what makes camcorders camcorders. Recording inside the device, to any kind of video storage (tape, disc, or memory), is what makes them camcorders. There are still some non-recording video cameras in TV studios and surveillance systems.

There are still high-end video recorders on the market (e.g., GoPro), but an "ordinary" smart phone does a decent job.

GoPros aren't "high end" - they're just relatively specialised, with a price tag designed to convince you you're getting something special.
