Do you mean historically significant sightings like Taro Horiba 1943, or do you accept any recorded sighting like the one recorded on the following page, find jesustalkwithbill on https://jmshistorycorner.wordpress.com/2019/06/06/...

Just last week one was spotted & record made near here. If you wish to see her some of the local fisher folk will take you out in there boats to find her. For a reasonable fee. With luck & near the end of your money they may even manage to let you catch sight of her from some distance away. Fisher folk know all that is in the sea. They will swear they exist & take you to see them. They are honest hard working people. So would not lie to you. They will set around for months talking about the great mermaid hunt once you leave poorer like flat broke but they hope not wiser & wish you to soon return.

If by recorded sightings you mean people being so stoned out of their minds that they see something that isn't there I'm sure it happens often.
