Almost everything is fun to do in New York City. Just walking around Times Square and seeing all the people from different countries and weird people doing weird stuff it’s just great. You’re allowed to be an individual in Manhattan and nobody bothers you unlike here in fascist police state Connecticut where you get arrested or hospitalized and lobotomized with psych drugs if act different or are unique. New York City is so much more civilized and open to creativity

My recreational interest is entirely done underground. Tunnel tours occur in NYC.
The area has an underground homeless population often with illicit usage of any
available public utilities for heat and light. Former ground level entry areas have
been infilled and infrequently are discovered after decades of disuse. Illicit tour
access is known as Urban Exploration. The sport of climbing any man-made
works is called Buildering. Both may have tour parties. Carry a bail bonding
agency business card to speed exit from any local jail. For other urban
underground adventuring see nss@caves.org

There are a TON of things to do. It's hard to give advice without knowing your interests and without knowing what you consider affordable.
Theater shows are popular, and there's a show for everyone. But those tickets can be pricey. There is the TKTS booth in Times Square where you can get deals on same-day tickets.
Central Park is free to visit, and so is the 9/11 Memorial (not the museum). You can take the Staten Island Ferry for free, which gives you a nice view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is also popular.
There are lots of museums, tours, observation decks, etc that you can visit, but they all have costs associated with them.

Everybody asks this question but never says what would interest them. Why do you expect people to spend time coming up with places and events you would have no interest in?
Update: Events change day-to-day. Get the latest New Yorker or New York Magazine, or the Sunday NY Times Arts and Leisure section, for lists of shows, recitals, exhibitions for the coming week.

what's your idea of fun? Museums, theater, sports, dancing, bars, historical sites, zoos, beach, parks, etc?
Museums: American Museum of Natural History/Hayden Planetarium; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; The Cloisters (medieval art)
Theater: dozens concentrated in Greenwich Village and around Times Square (the latter tend to be expensive)
Sports: Yankees. Mets; Rangers; Nets; etc
more history than can fit here
zoo in each borough, each with a different specialty
Actually all of those things sound fun to me
I like dancing, theaters good food, comedy shows ect
