I m writing a story and how would a seemingly harmless virus that by the time they realize it s deadly has already spread to the world work?

It would need to be highly contagious (like measles) and airborne (like measles).

Try Kuru also known as the laughing death, a real virus.

The virus could be undetectable to start with then it gets out of control in the human body there's no hope to cure people are dying like crazy docs as well people are in a panic and worried what will be next,All of a sudden the virus switches course and the virus is healing the body .This would be a man made distaster, good luck with the story..

That happens in real life too, so it is not a new plot.

several SF novels on this theme, the most recent out earlier this year "Light of the Ancient Sun" by Patrick Sarver
classic one from over 60 years ago "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart

Well, you said it yourself. It was seemingly harmless, so nobody was taking any precautions until it's too late. If you want to keep it simple all you need to do is to have a virus with very mild onset symptoms. Maybe it could look like a common cold, but then a disturbingly amount of people, more than usual are getting the "cold", and then the first start dying...

You're writing the story, aren't you?
