Why do people who get promoted over you retain their status above you AFTER you both move on to future assignments?

When I was a teenager the people who made supervisor became bank tellers and things afterwards where I could only work at restaurants.

Later at a call center those who got promoted became higher paid corporate trainers and business analysts while I could only be in the call center again.

Since winners and losers are chosen why do the lucky ones get to retain and capitalize on being lucky while others are stuck in a dead end?

    It may be any of a bunch of reasons, but the most obvious reasons have to do with competence. The bosses think the other person could do a better job than you if either of you are promoted.

    But, there are other reasons that have been used for promoting people. Some are good, others are bad:

    - Personal favoritism

    - Seniority

    - Education or training

    - Nepotism

    - Better language/logic/math skills

    - Attitude

    - Personal bearing and (unfortunately) looks

    - Race/religion/national origin/gender (unfortunately this still exists, and sometimes in the reverse manner

    - Being more like the boss

    - Ability to follow orders

    - Personal initiative

    Not every job is for everyone. Jobs are like dating. It's really a struggle to find your one true love and you start to think it might never happen. Maybe you dated some people (and you had a few jobs here and there) but you didn't really feel anything for that person (or that job). It didn't really blow you away and therefore you didn't really blow it away either.

    It seems like you're still really struggling to find your one "true love" job that really lights your fire and springboards you to success. That's hard if you live in a smaller town where there's little opportunity and you have very few chances to find what you're good at.

    it's not luck. Typically they have a higher skill level or work ethic.

    Because YOU are supposed to work your way up, proving you can do the new jobs. Restaurant workers can aim to be assistant managers you know.

      I disagree. Not everybody is deemed worthy of being management material. Some people aren't management material and even THEY know it.

    Winners and losers are not chosen by luck. Success has far more to do with positioning oneself to be successful (being smart, doing good work, getting along with people, getting recognized by the boss for meeting or exceeding the boss's expectations, good reviews/comments by customers, anticipating needs and filling them, etc.). Also, if people are at a low level long enough, hiring managers and others begin to see them as belonging in lower-level jobs. If you don't work your way up early on, you get pigeonholed.

    They worked hard and learned things on the job whereas some people thought that was 'sucking up to the boss', and some other people declined to do the extra work because they were not getting paid to do the extra work.

    Because of that, the people who did the 'extra' stuff were seen to be the type of people who would actually get to work on time and do their job with little supervision and the people who did not do the extra work were looked upon as people who could do that job but little more. They were seen as people with no ambition.

    So the people who can work unsupervised get promoted to jobs where they are supervising the people who seem to need to be supervised.

    As time passes, the people who have proven that they can and will do their jobs and need no supervision are given more and more responsibility. If they take it AND they are successful...they continue to move upward and gain more responsibilities...and more of what you call 'status'.

    So.. in order to move upward, you need to:

    Act like you love your job.

    Come in earlier than others.

    Volunteer for overtime when it is offered or necessary.

    Learn more about the company and how it works. Ask your supervisor for more assignments. Ask your supervisor to teach you the things in your department that you do not know.

    Do not complain or bellyache about the company or other employees while at work or while being around anyone you work with.;

    those that can talk or bribe their way into a supervisor position when they are young continue the same thing when they are older. And places just seem to like stuck up people even though they are usually incompetant at their jobs
