As I was growing up I studied relentlessly and learned that physical matter and energy are the actual basis of reality -- not my own subjective mental experiences, as Christianity would have me believe. Even before I was a teenager, I knew with certainty that my subjective mental processes cannot directly influence objective physical reality. As a high school freshman I took an advanced biology class and learned how DNA and RNA control biological processes, including evolution. Nothing I ever learned in church explained how reality works as well as the biology, chemistry, and physics I first experienced in high school. Mostly, I discovered that it is possible to correctly understand how reality actually does work -- unlike the biblical nonsense my parents were relentlessly shoving down my throat.
