Consistency. We all pronounce words a little differently. If we all spelled words the way we say them, everybody would spell the same words differently. That would make it harder to read.
If I were to spell out the sentence the way *I* say it, it would be "opin tha dor". Looks a little weird, doesn't it? (to say nothing of making spell-check go crazy)

One reason is door is spelled that way and another is "dur" is pronounced as in either durable or duress, neither of which is comparable to how door is pronounced.

I don't know about you, but I don't pronounce 'the' as 'de', nor do I pronounce 'door' as 'dur'.
