    Turned into shadows.

If they were far enough away from the blast to not be killed by it, then they might have retained some sight. However, their retinas would be damaged by the bright light and heat.

Actually there were American POWs in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the time of the bombings, many were killed.

The light will burn out your retinas.

The same as what happened to the soldiers who looked directly at the atomic blast of the Trinity test in White Sands: nothing specific which was depending on the direction they were looking at.

Read Feynman's memoirs if you want to know more - he was the only guy there who disobeyed orders (ok, he was a civilian) and didn't use sunglasses or turned away.

There were no US soldiers that looked at the blast. The only US soldiers close to it were those in the plane dropping the bomb, and they were well informed not to look or wore goggles.

But for many Japanese who looked directly at the blast, they either suffered blindness or some loss of vision.

There were at least a dozen US airmen who died as a result of the blast. There were prisoners of war from several nations in the area.

If they weren't in the immediate area, nothing. (Early atomic bombs did a lot of damage, but they didn't have the power that hydrogen [fusion] bombs do.)

at best they would be 91 years old if any are even still alive today.

They were probably close enough that the blast killed them.
