Why is the gap embarrassing?
People take time off work for all kinds of things whether it's to travel, have a child, write a book, take care of a relative, go to school, etc.
I never ask applicants why there is a gap in their employment history. It's really NONE of my business. And quite frankly, wouldn't most people not work if they didn't HAVE to?
Yes, if I see a gap I might see what I could glean from the interview and I'd also be vigilant about checking references. I might even ask the former employer if they knew which job you left them for (in case you left one off your resume).
But heck, there is nothing that automatically makes someone a bad employee simply because they had some time where they weren't working.
