When receiving loans and the Federal Pell Grant for school, what is used first? The loan or the Pell Grant?

Federal regulations state that the Pell grant is the first source of aid and has to be used before any other type of aid. After the Pell, the school must use all other forms of grant aid that the student qualifies for before using loans. When loans are used, need based loans (such at the Direct subsidized loan) have to be used before non-need based loans.

Grants and scholarships are applied before any loans.

The the per semester value of the Pell Grant would be used first and then the remainder would be paid via loan.
