Fasting blood tests help show what your basal/resting rates are, just after eating your cholesterol and blood sugar will rise, naturally. So having a look at what it rests at is a better indication of your overall health. Usually for blood sugar, but cholesterol occasionally, though increasingly less common.

Make sure you are getting the proper blood test, the regular cholesterol tests the docs usually give with just the numbers don't tell the whole story and the docs might put you on statin drugs unnecessarily. Ask for a particle size test also, the tests were called NMR or VAP in the past. If you have large particle LDL it won't stick in your arteries, no matter what the numbers say.

A fasting blood test is usually done to check for diabetes. It should have nothing to do with cholesterol.

Because levels were high enough that the doctor feels it's important to get a more accurate figure. Doesn't mean anything is horribly wrong.
