The music field is very competitive, whether you go into popular music or classical. Orchestras are very demanding - they want perfection - and there are long rehearsals. IDK how they pay, but it's more work than people think. As for popular music, you have to get noticed by the public, which is a trick in itself. Admittedly professional musicians have a leg up on half skilled performers in popular music, but even gifted musicians sometimes fail to click with an audience or with band members. Of course music is so wonderful it's worth studying for its own sake, and maybe the music industry in the UK is not as difficult as the industry in the USA.
If I were going into photography, I'd concentrate on a specialty, such as forensic photography, or electron microscope photography.
