Why do catchers pick signs and spots for the pitcher to throw?

Because if the catcher doesn't know what pitch is coming and where there's a good chance it could get by him. And if runners are on base, that's not a good thing.

Have you ever wondered why batters swing and miss so often but the catcher can catch 99% of the pitches? Its partly because the catcher has the advantage of knowing what pitch is being thrown and where.

There's no reason why it can't be a coach or the pitcher himself deciding what to throw. But one way or another there needs to be signals so the catcher knows what's coming.

Most teams just end up letting the catcher make the pitch calls so the coach doesn't have to micro manage and the pitcher can focus on pitching.

Because they know what each batter could strike out on or not.
