Do we need a backpack to travel around Columbia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador for 6 months or will a suitcase work?

A backpack is normally smaller than a suitcase obviously. A 6-month trip will require a suitcase, but you might want a backpack, too.

I'd go with a small, light suitcase, with a strap you can sling over your shoulder, AND a backpack, unless you're willing to drag a really big backpack around. My husband had the two items for his 6-month trip trekking around Europe.

Of course you need a backpack, if you plan to walk around the cities and travel elsewhere. You will need a suitcase if you're traveling from one country to another.
