Well, I have had thick naturally curly hair my entire life and as such, I have gotten positive compliments on my hair my whole life through.
I love my hair, even though that was not always the case. Once I learned the proper products to use on my hair, I fell in love with it. Curly hair needs special treatment when washing and drying and styling. If you buy the right products, your hair will look absolutely fabulous.
I find that leave in conditioners are fantastic, so are light control mooses, and hair serums.
There was (not sure if it is still on television) a Million Dollar Match Maker show where the host interviewed people to meet millionaires who went on dates. This woman always instructed the curly haired women to straighten their hair because she believed men did not like women with curly hair. But, quite frankly, unless you are going to be a complete and total slave to your head every day of the week, I think it is ridiculous to fight nature.
I say embrace the locks by using the right products so you are the best you can be.
I have never had a man make fun of my hair, with the exception of Joe, the janitor at school who used to tease me that he was going to turn me up side down to use my hair as a mop to clean the floors because of my long curly hair!! LOL
