    LAWS VARY BY STATE

It depends on Zoning Laws, mostly.

Here in MA, unless the general area is zoned "Farm" you need a minimum of 5 acres to be able to get a classification of "Farm".

    Farm sizes vary. Next question.

Hard to say. A family smallholding would traditionally require 4 acres to support them. So anything bigger than that. In the UK a small farm would be about 20 acres plus as a general rule. Hard to make money off anything smaller but nowadays there are more specialist crops such as wasabi that require less land.
