In Maine they tax seemingly everything accept for items that are considered essentials, such as food staples and clothing. Food staples are foods like vegetables, meat, dairy, but they tax foods that are considered a snack, like potato chips, packaged cookies or candy.

In New Hampshire there is no sales tax on food or liquor or most anything else. They do tax service (meal in a restaurant is taxed for example), real estate, vehicles and capital gains over a certain amount.
