In the Western World, the Old Testament of the Bible containing the original 5 Books of Moses starts with the story of Adam and Eve, in which one son killed another, and then traces the ancestry. Again there was a good son and a bad son. Finally, Jacob, a good son, married and had 12 children. The descendants of those 12 children formed the tribes of Israel, and each tribe took after the original son of Jacob. These stories go back at least 4,000 years or more.
