*Interstellar travel cannot be fast enough when compared to an intelligent species’ or their civilization’s possible maximum lifespan or there can be no technology to communicate over such long distances.
*An alien species technologically advance enough to travel galaxies has probably encountered billions of other species and has developed strict guidelines on interacting with them.
*An alien species so advance is probably more intelligent and humans are insignificant in comparison. They can effortlessly blend inside our society and abduct humans at whim, if they wanted to interact or study us.
*We are inside the borders of a powerful galactic empire that wants to watch us and prevents any other alien species from interacting with us or that sees us as inconsequential and other alien species are too afraid to approach us because of offending the big guy.
*An alien species so advance is beyond our perception and understanding. Spiders see us as furniture that moves, lab rats aren't intelligent enough to know that they are being studied etc.
I believe the most likely scenarios are that they are either too advance for us to perceive or that we are under the supervision of a giant hive mind or a totalitarian empire (with a strict policy on technology usage or space travel) that has created a policy of non-interaction or secret study of any species it encounters.
The aliens would have first started by travelling to habitable planets close to them and by the point that they were advance enough to reach us (who are quite far from them) they either would have analyzed so many species any more would be pointless or at the least have created strict guidelines on interacting with others in the universe.
Plus, an alien species so technologically advance definitely has weapons that could destroy themselves in a fraction of a second. (Even we, who can't travel that far out into space, have nuclear weapons). If they freely allowed their technology to spread into the hands of individuals with a dangerous way of thinking, it would long ago have annihilated itself, when one of their own in a moment of anger pressed the button to activate the giant galaxy destroying weapon.
So they either are a hive mind which cannot hold conflicting views/opinions/ideas or a totalitarian empire that absolutely doesn't allow anyone but the most qualified and like-minded to use their most advance technology and has decided that openly interacting with lower lifeforms is pointless and potentially dangerous.
We (the aliens), for example, study and perform experiments on lab rats (the humans), but no scientists (as far as I know) is trying to make them as intelligent and technologically advance as us, so why would some random super-intelligent alien species do us such a random favor?
Even the president, arguably the most powerful man in the country, cannot use nuclear weapons on a whim, so imagine the restrictions such an advance species would put on the usage of their technology.
Obviously, this is assuming that such technology is possible in the first place and these aliens are long-lived or/and travel quickly and safely enough around the universe to reach us and send information back to their home-planet in order to reach a decision on what to do with us. It is entirely possible that contacting other intelligent species may be impossible because of such advance species destroying themselves due to inside conflict long before reaching such heights of technology, long distance space travel being inherently very dangerous, difficulties of extending their species' lifespan and improving their own biology sufficently enough to survive lightspeed-travel etc.
