What animal was it?

So I was camping on Mount Lemmon near summerhaven and at about 2 am I heard what sounded like water dripping in a cave. I knew it was an animal though. It was a continuous string of one yip and then two yips after. The only way I can describe it is like one quarter note then two eighth notes. What animal was it?

My guess would be a female red fox-

Foxes tend to burrow in caves or tunnels, usually their den is 3-4 feet from the enterance, which would explain why you heard it, but didn't see the animal either. Foxes also will make "yipping" noises, usually done as a territorial mechanism, to warn off other animals! You likely were too close to its den, and it was trying to protect its kits from an intruder.
