Should I file and claim or should my boyfriend file and claim dependents?

Update:

I just left my job for maternity leave my boyfriend will be taking care of the bills for the rest of the year. Should i file single with a dependent and he files as single or should he file and claim us both, or even just the baby since i worked half the year? ideally which ever one gets the best return.

That depends on who the dependents live with, how they are related to each of you, and many other factors.

Based on what you have stated--practically nothing--we can't tell.

Note, the 2019 income threshold is $4200.

If couple lives together, the one who does not claim the child cannot claim EIC.

If you earned more than $4150 this year, your boyfriend cannot claim you. If you both qualify to claim your child (probably would), the one with the higher income must claim. You can't manipulate dependents to try to get a bigger refund and/or EIC. Since the income limits for EIC for a married couple are higher, you might want to consider getting married before Dec. 31.
