He was clever in a way, because he knew how to manipulate and deceive many Germans and many Foreigners alike.

But then again, many logical connections he tried to establish were nonsense. Also, he was stupid enough to underestimate people because they were from other supposedly inferior "races" (in Hitler's small mind).

He must have been, to get so many people going along with his ideas. But he would have been smarter if he had channelled his intellect in more profitable ways - making use of the jews for example rather than trying to exterminate them. He could have helped make Germany a successful country without the repellent racial policies that eventually brought the whole edifice down. Think of the amount of energy and money and manpower that must have gone into the building and maintaining of all those horrible concentration camps. What a waste.

Implementing policies that ends up with you killing yourself in a cold wet hole in the ground with millions of Russians coming to cut your balls isn't a sign of being smart.

    It's a sign your a total ***.

He was smart in his early days in power, in knowing the sorts of things which would impress the general public, and make Germany seem "great again". He was totally irrational towards the end of WW2, when it was obvious that Germany was not going to win, and it was obvious that Germany should be doing everything possible to ensure that most Germans would continue to be alive.

As with most human beings, there is no one single word such as "smart" or "stupid" or "industrious" or "lazy" which can be applied to their whole lives.

Obviously he was a very intelligent man until later in the war where the effects of syphilis he caught during WW1 started to ravage his brain and started to cause madness. This is a common side effect of syphilis in its later stages. The Americans did a report on Hitler's health during the war and found out Hitler was infected with syphilis and decided not to try and assassinate Hitler as they felt in his current mental state he was more of a hindrance to the German war effort and was actually making many bad decisions because of his fragile mental state. Hitler late in the war became a man with a shocking temper and raging the moment he got any bad news. His Generals quite often would lie to him about how badly the war was going as bad news could end up with generals being shot on Hitler's orders. Even in the final weeks of the war where Germany was collapsing the generals had Hitler believing they were beating the advancing allies back and would still win the war. Hitler also had an obsession with revenge and wanted London and Paris wiped off the map. Luckily the General in charge in Paris realised Hitler had become mad and Germany had lost the war and decided not to destroy Paris before he retreated as Hitler ordered and decided to surrender his troops to save them from a futile fight until the German surrender.
