Do some people who call themselves blunt actually hide behind the word?

Sometimes, because they don't want their personalities to be known to others at certain times.

There is blunt and then there is rude. Two different things. You can be blunt without being rude. Some people are just rude. Blunt isn't their problem.

It isn’t good to be “blunt” all the time.

    Yes. That is correct.

See if you care for any of these:

straightforward, frank, plain-spoken, candid, direct, bluff, to the point, forthright, unequivocal, point-blank, unceremonious, undiplomatic, indelicate..... to have a conversation with them, or associate with them on a regular basis?

    Your choice...

Most blunt people are basically shy or have very little to offer, and hide behind a facade of terseness, or bravura...

Sometimes. They seem to think they have carte blanche for being rude, abusive pricks as long as they preface it with "I tell it like it is". And the irony is that a lot of them are really thin-skinned when it comes to accepting any personal criticism at all.
