Be sure to have it inserted the correct way

Memory cards are inserted label side up. For vertically mounted memory card readers, try label-left (although this may not always work).

Few ideas. You have likely purchased the wrong memory. The easiest way to tell is to hold the memory stick up next to the memory slot and see if the little notch lines up. If it is a laptop, it should slide in easily at about a 45 degree angle then click into place when you push it forward. If a desktop, be sure the retaining clips at either end are retracted then line up the notch and push down firmly and evenly. No more force than you can generate with your thumb. You should hear the clips click closed. Look carefully to see if the clips fit into the notches on either side of the memory stick.

It's not supposed to or you wouldn't be able to get it out again.
