Why are there naming laws in the United States?

The last time I checked you can name your child anything you like in the United States so having naming laws in the United States doesn’t even make sense.

    The laws vary from state to state. There are few restrictions.

    I named my non-binary child— Thing. It can choose to be one of the 100+ genders.
