The novel was written in Europe. (Passive voice, the action happening to the subject of the sentence)
The author wrote the novel in Europe. (Active voice, the subject of the sentence performing the action)

Novels are not 'wrote'. That is illiterate. Novels are written.
Authors write books.
The author wrote this particular book in Europe.
The author has written many books in Ameerica, but this book was written in Europe.
