How many points would a NFL team have to beat the point spread by in order for you to think that a significantly unexpected outcome occurred?

    Yahoo Answers now requires that answers contain 15 or more characters,so the "A proper response to this question requires just one or two keystrokes., comment in your update is inaccurate .

    It's irrelevant since the spread is dictated by the amount bet on each team not what the books think the final point totals will be. Don't do much betting on spreads, do you? Books' goal is equal betting on each team. They make their money on the vig, at ±20%, a very significant amount. If they keep the bets even they can't lose money.

    It doesn't work that way. A 1 point favorite winning by 10 is fairly significant, but beating a 20 point spread by those same 9 points is no big deal.
