Is creating a blog about what you buy a business? Can you write off those things you buy on your taxes?

You must have a realistic profit expectation for a business to exist. It has to be more than wishful thinking. Would you invest in someone else who was doing this and expect to make a sizeable profit? If not, no, it's not a business.

You can't just pretend something is a business and write off a bunch of personal expenses. If it's a hobby (which it probably is), you have to report any income you make from it but under the new tax law you can't write off hobby expenses.

You probably won't be able to write them off on your taxes.

  • The tax code has been simplified, and shortened for 30 + lines to less that 25, so its very difficult to have any deductions. Even with mortgage interest, large charitable contributions, childcare, unreimbursed business expenses, its still very difficult to reach the bar of the standard deductuction. Which is actually a good thing.
