    This is a chem. question

    ... If 2 elements combine (react) to form 2 (or more) compounds the, for a constant amount of one element, the amounts of the 2nd element will form be in a constant ratio of small whole numbers.

    Ex === carbon and oxygen. --- 1st compound 3g C combine with 4g O. the 2nd compound 6g C combine with 16g of O.

    ==== use C .. change the 1st .. 3gC/4gO ... to 6gC/8gO so that there is a constant amount of C.

    ... so from the 1st compound to the 2nd the ratio of Oxygen is 8/16 which reduces to 1/2 <<<< small whole number ratio
