Would you have to be absolutely mad to make a journey on the First Fleet?

Imagine the Admiral of the British Navy propositions you to escort 736 convicts to a place called New South Wales that is completely uncharted. It is explained to you that it will be a one way journey, with very limited supplies and no chance for a restock in 11 years. You must be out of your mind to say "yes".

The convicts had no choice. If they did, it was either transportation or hanging. At least with transportation they had a chance at life and most kept their noses clean and prospered.

You would have preferred getting off in the tropics where your perverse fetishes could be indulged.

Absolutely. You'll be mental as anything after that long journey and yet get impaled by the Aborigines spears when setting foot on their land.

Convicts on the first fleet had no say in the matter and Australia was a better place to live anyway until the white Australia policy was ended .

The Polynesians explored the South Pacific in canoes with paddles and a supply of coconuts. The Vikings went to North America in not much better. You are talking about first class travel by comparison.

In those days in the military you either obeyed orders or they flogged you at best or strung you up.

They may have faced some hardship at first but they had the pick of the best land before the wildlife got exterminated. Running a business or raising cattle and sheep or growing produce could make a man wealthy very quickly, not to mention an entire continent that had never been mined or panned for gold or opal or anything else.

Compared to what they had at home it would have been like getting promoted straight from corporal to colonel.

    Where do I sign up?

I just wonder what they used for toilet paper and toothpaste back then.

Mad or on the run from the law. Could you imagine spending 11 years in a British prison of the time?
