    Redox reaction ....

    Oxidation == increase in oxidation state

    Reduction == decrease in oxidation state

    Oxidizing agent == the reactant which causes an element to be oxidized. It contains the element reduced.

    Reducing agent == the reactant which causes an element to be reduced. It contains the element oxidized


    F2 + 2Fe^2+ ---> 2F^- + 2Fe^3+

    Iron is oxidized and ferrous ion is the reducing agent.

    Fluorine is reduced and F2 is the oxidizing agent.

    Free F in F2 gains electrons, so it is reduced

    ... because it is reduced it is the oxidizing agent.

    Fe2+ ions lose electrons .. so they are oxidized

    .. because they are oxidized, they are the redicing agent.
