I have a mild case of RLS myself. When I'm watching a movie at night in a comfortable chair, my leg (either one) will be uncomfortable so I'll go to move it. But instead of moving it twitches and kicks for a second or two.
So I looked it up. I thought it isn't caused by anything but it turns out there are some things that cause it. It can be caused by an iron deficiency, especially in a certain part of the brain. It can be made worse by certain medications like anthistamines, antidepresseants, antipsychotics, and even caffeine.
There's a really good article about it here:

Lack of iron in the blood or lack of dopamine. As explained to my husband by his Doctor this afternoon.
UK.
