I use the "sneaking food into a movie theater" guideline. So basically, If you wouldn't sneak it into a movie theater, you probably can't bring it on a plane

The food needs to be within the guidelines for whichever country you are leaving and arriving in. For example, you couldn't take a flask of soup with you unless purchased after security. But things like sandwiches and crisps are fine. I would stay away from anything with nuts out of respect for anyone around you who may be allergic and also anything very smelly.
