Mindfulness, meditation, and yoga!

Consider one thing at a time. No second thing. This is how you focus. If your minds thinks of something else then get more mind considering the thing you were considering before. This is also a type of meditation. Meditation is only focusing on one thing. Usually it's the breath. But you can meditate by focusing on walking for instance and walk. Nothing else. There isn't a big secret lolSource(s): I learned this from a monk

Someone here has suggested being calm. Concentration is not hard work. It is a somewhat relaxed state of mind. Think of a guitar string that is properly tuned - not too tight or too loose.
A study that was reported in the NY Times found that students who took a very brief mindfulness course, only two weeks, performed better taking tests. They said this helped them deal with distracting thoughts. Of course, they would want to keep practicing to maintain these benefits.
This answer has suggestion for learning mindfulness. Apps that teach it are very popular. It also has information on other useful stress reduction methods.

Before anything, calm your brain, take a minute or two to sit in a comfortable position and just breathe. Understand where your focus needs to be, focus on the understanding of what is worthy of your distraction. Identify what deserves your focus. Unplug for 30 minutes, if you need to focus, log out of social media, log out of email, or just shut off your phone for 30 minutes. You can get so much done when you’re not always interruptions.

Like anything in life that you want to excel in, you have to practice.

There are many ways to improve your focus or mental discipline. A common one is meditation (and there are many kinds of meditation). In my opinion mathematics or formal philosophy are other good ways. Or sudoku, or chess, or anything that requires you to use focus and/or logic (it's a skill and like many skills it increases with practice).
