You may be overlooking that many animals can do just fine in captivity if cared for properly.
I have had a menagerie of pets in my day,
Dogs, cats, possum, skunk, rabbits, all free roam to come and go as they please, same with ducks and geese.
Had a pet mouse and his cage was hardly more than where he slept much of the day, the rest of the time, he was happy on my shoulder or in my shirt pocket and went where I did. Sometimes fall asleep late night with him near and wake and he was in his own bed in the cage with door open.
He loved exploring the back yard, nibbling on dandelions, and came when called.
The secret word is being kept properly and knowing how with a particular animal, their needs, how they live and providing an adequate home for them.
There are a number of animals classed as pets that just don't make it in the confinement of cages. I hear people trying to "crate train" a dog, well that is not how to properly keep any dog.
You sound to be one of those I would expect to be solicited by PETA, their notion is do ban all pets, kill all the domestics.
Your notion of a case against pets has been overruled.
