The man was smart enough to walk away while still healthy. He has enough money and the smarts to do whatever he wants to do in life. He seems to enjoy keeping a low profile. He doesn't want the glitz and glamour. He jumped off the ship before anyone else realized it was sinking.

In his press conference the day (January 11th 2017) after the retirement announcement, Edwards said he was doing it to stay healthy for his family, as being in a race car was the biggest risk to his health.

Probably because he had made more than enough money to live lavishly for the rest of his life, he was still relatively young and in excellent health. I want to say his wife is a doctor who specializes in patients with brain/neurological trauma, so I m sure she was well aware what could happen to him driving a racecar for a living, and was likely influential in his decision to retire.
