Why are liberal states like California, Massachusetts and Vermont so expensive for living?

Vermont is a strange one because it is a mostly rural state.

It actually is by locations within states as one factor. Real estate costs are a supply-demand. Housing costs more where people want to live. It is a large factor in cost of living. Public school system is a big factor at grade shool through college level.

Higher cost of living and higher incomes do go together but is not exact

Social services and worker protection are generally higher in liberal states.

    Minimum wage, for example

    http://www.ncsl.org/research/labor-and-employment/...

    Federal minimum

Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin

    California is $12 now, $13, $14, $15 on January 1 2020-2022

Massachusetts is $12 now, ramping up to $15 in steps last increase 1/1/2023

Vt is now at $10.78 and will increase by 5% or CPI whichever is smaller each year.

Using 1980 minimum wage and consumer price index, the minimum should be close to $10/hour now.

Vermont does not have a high cost of living

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/economy/2018/...

Very High - NY, NJ, Hawaii, California

    High - Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts

Above average - Washington, Virginia, Vermont, New Hampshire, Colorado, Alaska

Over the top regulations, over-valued real estate, a Fat bureaucracy at all levels of government, crazy-high taxes to cover under-funded government entitlements....ad nauseum. You know that things in that State are screwed up when freaking lifeguards are paid six-figure salaries!!

Throw in California's sanctuary policies....and you have a recipe for fiscal failure.

My personal experience is with MA and VT. Massachusetts is extremely expensive in the greater Boston area and gets less so in other locales . It's expensive because there's opportunity here and people want to live here. Also, real estate speculators and investors have driven up the pricing.

You're right, VT is weird. The "hip" areas are expensive and 2 towns over - not at all.

A lot of refugees from NY in VT.

It is because of supply and demand. So many people want to live there, that it drives the price up.

Mostly because they want to keep their reputation of education. Conservatives, often being lower-class rednecks, would tarnish that.
